AHP Trainings for

HIV Counseling and Testing Programs

The HIV Counseling and Testing Training Program consists of two tracks: one for the HIV Counselor II and one for the HIV Counselor I. The Counselor II is trained to conduct State Office of AIDS counseling and testing services for both clients at higher risk and clients at lower risk of contracting HIV. The Counselor I is trained to conduct services for clients at lower risk only.

Counselor II trainings include: a four-day basic training, a two-day advanced training three months later, and a variety of one-day continuing education trainings. Counselor I trainings include: a one-day basic training, and starting in 2009, one-day continuing education trainings. Both Counselor I and Counselor II trainings include instruction in how to administer the OraQuick Advance Rapid HIV Test and interpret the test’s results.

AHP offers these trainings throughout the state. All trainings seek to help providers become skilled at the appropriate level of assessment and result disclosures for both conventional (two-session) counseling and testing and rapid (single-session) counseling and testing. The trainings combine information-based modules with values clarification experiential exercises, role-playing and other practice. All trainings encourage a neutral stance and build skills around results disclosure; in addition, Counselor II trainings focus on client-centered counseling, behavior change and sociocultural theories, and harm reduction theory.
